{getting dressed}
I talk alot about loving my sweatpants..
because I do.
But, if we were to get technical, they’re not really sweatpants.
The tag on the side when I bought them said, “lounge pants.”
because of course, lounge pants sounds way cooler than sweatpants!
but let’s get honest – they’re modified sweatpants with a fancy name.Whatever they want to call them, sweats, lounge, yogawear..
common is hello! elastic waistbands!!
the main thing they all have in
finally, they’ve given women a way to be comfortable without exactly looking like we’re in our pajama’s.For me though. sometimes comfort can come with some other side effects~
last year when we had first moved here I was really struggling with homesickness.
I daily battled discouragement, and probably even boderline depression…
I didn’t want to get out of bed. just the idea of getting dressed made me tired.
I wondered what the point was, since I knew no one, and would see no one. why did it matter?
But I discovered that when I got up. got dressed. combed my hair a little. maybe put on a bit of make up. I felt better.
it wasn’t about anyone else.
it wasn’t about impressing.
or competing.
or proving anything.
it was simply. for me!
I felt more awake. more alive. more ready to face the day. and just plain happier. It’s easy, especially, as stay at home mom’s to feel like there’s no reason to “get dressed.”
and not like we have to look like we just stepped out of Anthropologie…
but just putting a little effort into not looking like maybe what we often feel – frazzled and frumpy.
When you’re a mom, everyone else’s needs come first.
often even when it comes to taking showers and fixing hair.
it’s just what we do as moms.
but I think we also need to remember that being mom isn’t the summary of who we are, only part.
we can’t allow ourselves to get lost in there. And though we might not have the opportunity for spa days
or excess money to shop for new clothes in this season of our life~
we can use what we have. do what we can.
sometimes just painting your nails does wonders!
Now. I will forever love stretchy elastic waistbands first and foremost.
my favorite thing in the world is to come home, throw on my “lounge pants,” and lounge! But. I’ve been thinking about this again throughout this winter… though not as bleak as last.
still, it’s just easier and warmer to fall back into wanting to stay in those old black pants all day long.
and is it just me, or does summer seem way less complicated to get dressed? So. I’m writing this to encourage myself, and anyone else who knows where I’m coming from, to keep making an effort each day.
to not slip into a “not caring” kind of attitude.
because that effects more than just our appearance.
The Pleated Poppy does a wonderful segment called, What I Wore Wednesday, which is this exact idea-
just encouraging women to GET DRESSED!
I’ve wanted to participate, but honestly. I forget to take pictures of my outfits each day..
until I’m already in my lounge pants, lounging.
and I’ve recently discovered this new sight.
It’s a fun tool to see how things work together.
and to give you more of an idea maybe, what your style really is.
I tend to like all different styles – in pictures or on other people…
but there’s always just one I basically come back to. what seems more me.
What about you?
Which of these outfits is more your kind of style..
I mean, if I pinned you down on the ground and said you couldn’t get up until you narrowed it down to just one?
{which i really won’t do. promise.}1. Trendy
3. Dressy
5. Girly
6. Funky
speaking of clothes. I better go get to packing mine.
the kiddos and I are headed to Cincinnati tomorrow.
I’m excited to bE tHeRe. but do dread the trip alone without Shayne.
pray we have nothing eventful happen -
like a baby throwing up all over her big brother, causing him to nearly throw up too.
or border guards who seem to like searching vehicles just because they’re bored.
{based on true stories}
happy weekend-ing ya’ll.
and if your in sweats/lounge/yoga pants don’t you feel one bit guilty about it~
weekends are kinda better suited for elastic-y type stuff anyway.´¸.·¨) ¸.·¨)
(¸.·´ (¸.·´ (¸.·¨¯`♥ amberp.s. and just in case. yes, i know what 1 pet.3 says, and i believe it’s true!

So true! Dressing up, just a little, changes everything!
Trendy…classy…casual…different days, different styles.
Of those outfits I would definitely pick #1 or #2, and probably lean towards #2. I agree with you! I was just having this discussion the other night with some girlfriends and my friend who is a stay at home Mom said she ALWAYS gets up and gets dressed up for the day, even though most of the time she is going nowhere. She said it just makes her feel more productive and awake and ready to conquer the day! I have to go away almost every day, so I tend to get ready first thing in the morning…because I am going to be leaving. But…on a Saturday like today…it is my comfy sweats all the way. Loved your post!
I could do all of them and feel quite *me* but not the funky, it’s not me! =)
I strongly agree about getting dressed and pretty, it helps with my mood and even gives me the energy that a mom needs during the day. Do I follow it always? nope, and again nope. Some days it is simply easier to mope.
CUTE header for you too!!
Have a SAFE and SPEEDY trip down here and *prepare* for all the wildness (that I have read about recently)!! haha
@seekinHISwisdom - totally, totally!! some days it’s just easier to mope~ so agree. i started to put something like that in there but it added a whole other rabbit trail of thought, so i didn’t. glad you did though. the last thing we as moms need is one more blog post to make us feel guilty for those days we just didn’t feel like getting dressed, for crying out loud!!!
can’t wait to see ya, girl.
@grace_to_be - are you going to FFE?!?! so jealous if this is the case. i do realize that its also a long weekend which gives you more time to go and see your beautiful and precious family. Praying that all goes well as you head ‘south’ without Shayne.
i used to spend hours on Polyvore making different combinations…i love the ones you posted though. looking through the different outfits i say ohh i’d like to be more like that but i like that and i’d say that while i like the way that trendy looks in real life, i’ve bever been ON trend in my life. i did see most that i woas intrigued by in the funky one….those bracelents are amazing!!!
i tend to prefer my jeans and a tee and when i was at school alot opeople dressed professionally since we were heading into a profession and so i felt the need to ‘dress up’ a bit for school which got a bit old cause really i’m not too excited about ‘dressing up’ too much of the time..thought i do love jewelry
i totally hear you about getting dressed up for you though…how it kind of gives a kcik start to your day…thanks for sharing of your own journey.
i love all the outfits you picked, they all seem doable. my favorite for this winter is a short denim skirt w/ tall boots. Since I wear skirts most of my waking hours that I’m not in my loung-y wear
so #1, #2, and #4 I think I would like to jump in my closet right now. There’s room.
Excellent outfit choices! The comfy and girly outfits were my favs. Safe (and uneventful) travels my friend. See you in a couple of days!!
(neat links too)
thats a hard choice… except for the funky. don’t like that one. so if you were pinning me down i’d go eeny meeny minee mo…. oh yeah, #2.
safe travels… only 5 more days.♥
Kinda funny for me to look at the outfits ~ but if I just HAD to pick one, because you had me pinned down, for cryin’ out loud ~ I would choose #3 with long sleeves, sans the jewelry (not my thing) and shoes that an old lady could wear ~ LOL! Anyway, I know you would look adorable in all of the outfits ~
@grace_to_be - oh my word, nobody has any reason to read this and feel guilty!! ever. =) you are gracious that way, always!!
I keep looking at these outfit’s you displayed here, some neat’o stuff there. I enjoy putting outfit’s together, but hello, I have no clue how to make this body look good with that choice, sometimes I look slimmer then I really am (jeans do that for me) and the next I look like I weigh 25lbs more then I actually do. booo. I am hoping some super cool women can help me out at FFE shopping spree with that!!
I really like the “classy” outfit….but I would probably go more with “comfy” first off…..with a little classy every now and then. I just wish someone picked out cool outfits like that for me! I don’t like clothes shopping much!
Enjoyed your post!
I liked the comfy and the classy. Now, how to mix the two . . . lol
Great post and good point about not just forgetting about ourselves in all the business. It’s So easy to do that!
Actually I love them all but #1 is ME! (was this outfit originial with you? It looks really familiar to one I pinned on my board on Pinterest!)
And YES! Summer is WAY less complicated to dress for!!!! Have a great weekend with your family!
@jesusmotherof4 - no, no.. these were just sets i found. i haven’t had time to put some together myself. and glad i’m not the only one who thinks summer is easier to dress for.. i mean, a cute skirt, t shirt and flip flops, and you’re set. this winter business is just way too many layers for me!!
I love them all – but not sure any quite hit my “style” if I had a choice to really wear my style – I change with each, um, well nearly month. Right now I’m kind of hippie/freepeople-ish. Which might fit funky? Truth be, I enjoy creating a style no one is wearing. Out of these maybe a mix of trendy/funk? haha. Minus stripes going sideways. I like simplicity a lot – but not like the way folks think of it. I define my style on what I wear date night
– that would be me the most. And yes, SUMMER – ah! I love dresses.
I love how your words come alive, it makes a girl feel pretty
love the jean skirt and accessories , that’s so me, I just need boots to match. Some day you and I will go shopping with a visa with no limit
@MommytoBrooke - haha. i would love that, girl!!
i know what you mean about it being easier to not bother with getting presentable, but i also know how much better i feel about myself and life in general when i DO care!
super great selection of outfits. and, to assure that you will not later pin me down and make me pick one, right here and now i’d pick the Girly. and, then the dressy.
have a safe and BORING trip to Cincy!! the rest of your time will be anything but!!! =)(boring, that is!)
Winter is such a difficult time for me – I am like a record skipping (you do know what that means, don’t you; or are you way too young?) with the words, “I HATE BEING COLD!” And I know anyone living up north just sneers at my yellow-bellied-chicken-livered attitude about winter since cold for us Texans tends to be in the 40s, and severe cold tends to mean it dipped down into the upper 20s. Anyway, my winters are spent wondering if they make an outfit out of electric blankets!! But I am so with you on getting dressed, putting on a little make-up. It is amazing what it will do for my day, what it has always done for my attitude and energy level!
#2 and 5 would be my choices – in the 50+ versions, of course! I haven’t worn heels like that in 20 years!! But I’ve always been a girly-girl, but for everyday I love the jean skirt and boots. The classy choices you showed remind me so much of my Dannye Reigh! As a matter of fact, she probably has that outfit!
You probably read about it on Em’s FB, but they had quite a journey this week! Although it was tough, God was so gracious and provided their every need! Praying y’all have a much more uneventful trip than my kiddoes did on their way from MN to MI!!
i’m reading this is sweatpants. they can’t even be glorified to lounge pants : )
i agree though … mascara can do wonders to the days outlook!
enjoy your family!!
2, 4 and 6 are me! Different styles for different days! Loungewear is soo comfortable and I have been guilty of not worrying about dressing for the day or wearing makeup. I thought earlier today that I needed to start getting dressed because you never know who will come by and knock on the door. (not that we have a lot of visitors…….we don’t, but ya never know!)
No contest. I’ll take comfy. At 74, after having raised 7 kids, and babysat lots of grandkids, I deserve comfy.
@ata_grandma - Ha ha! Yes, you DO deserve “comfy.”
Amber, this was a great post for me to think about tonight! Before marriage and kids, I was consistently classy/dressy, but that style doesn’t seem compatible with my current responsibilities, so I’ve been re-thinking my wardrobe. Whatever the style is to be, I like to be minimalistic about it, of that I am sure!
@ata_grandma - yes! totally deserved!!
@H0LDfast - i wrote this in my sweatpants/loungepants!!
@angiearmour - i hear ya, angie.. i think different seasons call for different styles. before i was married my style was dressy. now, it’s probably an even tie between trendy/girly. though honestly, i really hate wearing jeans. ppl say they’re comfortable, but the most comfortable thing to me is a skirt. i’d prefer a soft feminine skirt any day of the week. and boots. boots with everything!!
hope you’re feeling okay w/ baby#3!! pregnancy style – now that’s a whole other subject!
I love #2! Trying to work on my post-prego-body so I’ll feel like I look halfway decent at all! Def feel the pull to the lounge paints of late.
I love outfit #1~
Have fun in Cincinnati!!!
i just moved up to Canada w/ my husband a year and a half ago…last winter was so so hard, but this winter has been much better
though part of it prolly has to do w/ our new lil’ baby
i agree w/ you though…there is something about just going ahead and putting a little makeup on and doing your hair up that makes you feel so much better, even if you know you aren’t going to be stepping foot out into the -30 weather outside!!!!
o yeah, and i like #2, but considering where i live, i’d prolly go w/ #4
I am definitely a #1 kind of girl, but feel the pull towards #3. I love the shoes! Being a mom of littles, I find I love occasions to dress up! Thanks for the reminder to make a effort each day.
That’s one of my favorite things about “date night” at our house – taking the time to get ready. . . put on something cute (usually still casual!), fixing my hair, makeup. But I’m also glad I can just BE – at home – in my “lounge pants” – no makeup – comfy – and still be loved by the man of my dreams. I don’t think I could do “cute” every single day.
safe tripping with kids! i hope that all goes well and fast. with no bored guards. and emptying tummies.
i am loving both #1 and #2 as in i’d totally wear ‘em. it was pinterest that helped me realize that i knew what i liked FOR ME after all. i love lots of styles but would start to feel confused when what i thought was awesome on so-and-so wouldn’t FEEL like me when i tried it. but lounge pants. they FEEL like me. totally. no confusion whatsoever.
but i’m also hearing you on taking the time to FEEL better. it’s worth it.
Oh, I LOVE this! LOVE it! I’ve been thinking along these same lines a lot lately… Probably because I’ve spent most day is lounge pants the past few months because of our drafty house, plus it’s just comfortable when I’m pregnant, and probably because around 5pm I run for the bedroom closet and try to look like a wife that’s fun to come home to.
Fun fun outfits. I don’t know which would really be more me. I love a good mixture of styles too - it keeps things fun and exciting.
I think I keep changing too… what I used to wear a lot of (dressy) I still like in part but not nearly always now. Definitely more girly and maybe some trendy in with it. I love things like this.
More please?
@grace_to_be - ”Trendy/Girly” is YOU for sure!!! I agree about jeans; they are NOT comfortable, in my experience. Very utilitarian with kids, though, as they can go from housework to playground to supermarket…hiding stains and wrinkles, and without the frumpy tendencies of “lounge pants.”
But skirts and dresses are also comfortable, and the most feminine and pretty, that’s for sure!
There is a brand-new book out called “I Have Nothing To Wear,” about finding and adapting your wardrobe to a specific style; I just happened to pick it up from the library before you wrote this post! Check it out if you can – it’s fun and helpful.
I have a pair of yoga type sport pants that are my go to pair this year. They are way nicer looking that sweats, with flaired legs, but oh so comfy! I love em.
I have a game I play with catalogs. What outfit would I wear today? Based on what I will be doing and the weather. It is kind of fun and doesn’t cost any $. I can also pick things that might not look so great on my figure, but I can imagine they would
Today I would pick #2
I like this post. And the outfits are delicious. I like 1, 2 and 5, even though I am not a jewelry or high-heeled sandal wearer. #2 would be my favorite, I think.
You’re so right about taking care of ourselves, looking our best, and feeling nicer inside because of it. Thanks for reminding me. And have a wonderful time at FFE!
Oh man, I think I need some new clothes!!! I have NOTHING this pretty in my closet! LOL
You are so right, getting dressed, putting makeup on, earrings, shoes…makes ALL the difference in my day. I make a point to do it, every single day. Even though what I actually wear is jeans and a decent cotton shirt. lol
As for what I would choose above? I like Trendy, and Girly and Comfy, depending on the occasion.
Have a safe trip!
such a good fun post! I’m usually the kind of person unless I have someone coming over or I’m going somewhere (which is actually usually 5 out of the 7 days) I don’t always get dressed or I wait till the last possible moment
Due to doing several different jobs, I kinda dress based on the occasion. I love all the styles except the trendy. It takes me some time to move into new trends and I have to have seen it for awhile. I’d say for most weekdays I’m mostly classy plus I love skirts and wear them most of the time-though sometimes I’m the comfy as well. Now when it comes to Sunday’s I’d be the girly one
Love Polyvore! I just discovered it like 3 weeks ago,I already spend way to much time on pinterest! Hope your time In the good Ol USA is fantabulous!
so what is FFE??? Hope you made it to your destination just fine.
The only time I wear lounge pants is when I’m excercising – I feel too yucky otherwise if I don’t dress up a bit – I usually dress for comfort and warmth though- jeans and dressier shirt.. no high heels for me, they hurt my feet and back – I do like boots though and wish I could afford to get a few pair – I don’t like a lot of the new styles though – waaaay tooo skimpy(none of which you picked);) I’m too much of a penny pincher to buy jewelry although it does look nice with the outfits you posted. I’d probably mix and match from all the outfits you posted – I’m not too concerned about keeping up with styles and trends – I wear what I like regardless of what’s in style. I wouldn’t mind some help though with colors that look good with my skin tone.
Fun styles…. if you wrestled me to the ground – I would probably pick #1 Trendy – but the comfty also said my name. Fun post. I am wondering how many pairs of sweatpants/lounge pants your allowed to wear before you have to admit you have a problem?! ba ha ha ha
Please know when I turned 30 I made a solemn commitment to never wear them or PJ pants out in public. I will look nice in public. Exceptions if your sick and you have to grab mends or your having a PJ day Scrapbook nite with the gals.
Have a great trip and enjoy every moment
Hi amber..I wanted to make sure you knew that kafekotka son is missing since 2/13 and they are asking for prayers…I posted a blog about it and also on facebook..if you could share it with others it would mean alot…she hasn’t posted on her blog about it…much love to you and your beautiful family!
@portiajules - i will pray. so sorry to hear that- i’m glad you let me know. it’s times like this the family of God can really band together!
