  • {company’s coming}

i don’t know if this is normal or not, and maybe i’m the only one..
but when it comes to cleaning my house, i seem to have two modes.

    ~ 578

first, is normal every week kind of clean.
    you know, just the basics.
    dusting the obvious spots.
    run the vacuum.
    each kid does a bathroom.
with me going back over it, just for good measure..
and because i’m a bit picky about pee around the toilet on the floor and that sort of thing!

but, then there’s the company’s coming cleaning mode.
and that’s a little bit more involved.
it’s like suddenly i see all these details that i never notice any other normal cleaning time…

which usually means that something like, oh, say the wood trim that lines the doors of my 1972 bathroom cabinets..
seems to somehow become number one priority above anything else.
what? it’s eight o clock and you still haven’t eaten dinner!!
because of course, it’ll only take 10 minutes to paint that wood strip, right?
and why change out of my cute summery skirt?
it’s such a simple project, no way i’m getting it all over me!
how do i always end up with each of my fingernails nearly painted and atleast a spot or two on my leg or face!!

and if my friend cindy, from pennsylvania, happens to call..
well, then maybe i’ll just sit right down in front of the cabinets, all cozy like, chatting away..
and realizing in the course of it all that painting this thin piece of trim isn’t so easy.
so.. then i’ll need to paint the whole door to match. and suddenly the entire cabinet!!

and.. if you’re already sitting on the floor, that close to the baseboard, well, you might  happen to notice how dirty it looks.
so, of course, it needs a bit of paint too.
and then the walls suddenly look nearly yellow…
so, might as well throw some paint on them too!!
and who knew that trim paint and wall paint aren’t the same?

    ~ 008
from another project i was working on

so.. then the next day. the 10 minute project has turned into a full fledged, repainting the whole bathroom..
which then has to be your husband’s job, because he’s so much better with a roller than you are!
and though you assure him there’s plenty of paint left, in the can you just found buried in some closet, that started the whole project to begin with..
he’ll be sending you out to buy more, because, no, it wasn’t enough.
and even though it’s the same brand.. well, color’s of paint somehow never match up.~

so.. now all the corners and around the ceiling, where i cut in, are clearly not the same as the walls..
and he says the entire thing must be re done.

and you realize {finally, though i’m sure it’ll happen again}..
way after the approximated “10 minutes” and 30 dollars later –
maybe it’s best to stick to the basics when company’s coming too!

but. if the company coming was your family. then. it really doesn’t matter..
cause with family, they could care less about trim down bathroom cabinets.
    and half painted walls..

and when my mom smiles at the smell of fresh paint and, oh sis.. you didn’t need to go to any trouble to make things look nice for us…
we’re just here to see you.

i’m reminded of one of the number one rules of all about having company…
that maybe, if i’m so anal about how everything looks that’s what people are going to notice way more than how spotless my house is,
or whether or not the paint matches!

because a relaxed hostess, home maker, wife, mother, woman, is one of the most beautiful assets any home can have!

and a place where people are comfortable and free to be themselves, is what makes people want to come. and to come back!
after all – - we’re all unfinished projects anyway.
    perfect is so over rated.
    in people and in homes!

picture above from when my family came to visit last year.
we’re all pretty much the same, except, some of us with a few more wrinkles..
and some with longer hair, some with shorter, and if you’re reese, then just more hair all together!!

about that summery skirt i was painting in..
a few weeks ago, i followed my friend meg’s advice, on paring stripes with floral’s.
i felt a little awkward about it all clashing, since i’m more a basic black and white girl..
but it was liberating too to lay clashing and awkward aside and just go with it!~

    iphone pics~ 1575iphone pics~ 1573

wasn’t sure if i should do tucked in or out. what do you think?
i went with out..just cause that way i didn’t have to suck my stomach in all day! ;)

and while on the subject of fashion, check out this blog sometime.-
who would have thought posting what you’re wearing every day could be so interesting.
i think if i had a style, and wasn’t so fond of my sweat pants, this would totally be it.
i secretly want to live in her closet..
not in a weird stalkerish creepy way. just in a, i live here so i can wear whatever i want, kind of way!

hope you’re having a great week.

    we’re off to the beach~
which combined with my family, now means, my favorite summer happy place just got happier!!

  • You remind me of my wife when company is coming—–And I have to help!!!

    Loved your photos and grsphics!!

    Frank

  • That’s totally me when it comes to company and cleaning :) I love your story of painting though, sounds like the books ‘if you give a mouse a cookie :)
You look so cute! I like the skirt and top and I think I’d wear it out instead of in. I still haven’t found anything in my closet to do the stripes and floral thing together. I’ve got stripes but not many floral things which I think is the problem.

  • That is just pretty hilarious about your “quickly painting the trim in the bathroom project” turning into repainting the whole thing!!  I love your outfit with the floral and stripes. And I would go un-tucked with the shirt. Super cute with those boots too!  Anyway, enjoy your family! I know you will!

  • Yeah, when company is coming, things go into overdrive around here ~

  • Same thing happens here! I actually invite people over so I have to go into overdrive sometimes. ;)

And I like the shirt untucked!

  • LOL, yep that’s me too, I see all sorts of trim that needs to be painted, blinds that need to be cleaned, all the small details when company is about to come. I have learned to let it go though….more or less.

I love that purple shirt when you are painting that is a great color on you! :)

Oh and I like the stripy shirt out! :) Looks more casual that way.

  • Fellow clean freak here. I drive my family crazy when we have a home on the market and I am trying to keep it show ready. My favorite time to clean is when everyone is gone for the day. Is tart cleaning the moment they walk out the door…and then I sit in the bask of its decluttered glory.

The shirt, most definitely OUT. Looks so cute!

  • Oh my!  This kind of reminds me of “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie”.  lol  I do the same thing when company is coming.  Which is totally silly because they come to see us not the house.  lol  Checking out the blog you recommended.  Sounds really fun!

  • LoL I can SO relate! I couldn’t have written it better myself.

  • I can totally relate with the whole cleaning painting drive coming on when company comes. I currently know of about 25-30 people coming here overnight during my sister in laws wedding, I started cleaning out under sinks and sorting through closets. The wedding isn’t until sept 29th but I believe I have a million things to do. ;)

Nice little painting attitude going on there!! I never painted a bed, but somehow you made it look fun. for real. :)

The skirt and shirt together is so cute. It’s cool how we can mix it together without so many fears of “the clash”. Plus boot season is coming back in, so glad!

Have a wonderful time with your family!!

  • no. i never try to paint a little when company is coming. to me, painting is a huge job, one that’s always a bigger hassle than you think it will be. i do definitely clean better when company is coming than when it’s just us, though. still, my favorite way to have people over is when my house is merely presentable (i didn’t stress myself out) and we’re like, hey, we should invite John and Jane.

i read an blog post not so so long ago (don’t know where) about someone who cleaned their house like a mad woman before this certain new acquaintance came over. and that woman stepped into this ultra clean house and went “wow, i certainly am never gonna be able to have you to MY house as clean as your house is” or something to that effect, and would you know, she never did have the Woman With the Clean House over, and their budding friendship kind of died. Clean Woman kind of felt like having things so super neat and clean can scare people away and make them feel like they didn’t measure up. So I guess it’s okay if my house is the house that doesn’t make people feel like they could never let me step foot in theirs ;) And if i come to your house, i promise i won’t be looking at the trim in your bathroom. if i DO notice a bit of dirt or something that could use a fresh coat of paint, i’ll just smile to myself that i am not the only one like that!!

  • ha ha you are hilarious. I totally get those two cleaning modes. Love your outfits and you totally are your own Kendi everyday.
I think you have just as cute a style if not cuter! What sweet family pictures! You have a such a beautiful family!
And I agree perfect homes and perfect people are just so overrated :) Have a wonderful time at the beach!

I think Kendi needs to start a comfy clothes/sweat pants only style blog for people like me :)

  • laughing here at these modes of cleaning. cuz, yep. i get that way too. so crazy how i try to do somanythings when i’m just having people over. i so want to be more let-come-what-may and enjoy the people…..
yay for family and beach! so happy for you!
    EnJoy!

  • yes, I have two cleaning modes…though having weekly company with home group has made me more mellow. I wish I would paint something though. To me that is just too much to take on. I can remember one of the boys asking, “who is coming over”, once when cleaning. Yikes! Does that say we only clean for company
Oh, and I have always loved navy and white stripes!
The blog is fun, I can see you in those outfits!

  • “a relaxed hostess, home maker, wife, mother, woman, is one of the most beautiful assets any home can have!”

    I love that part best.

    And…untucked. : ) You did good.

  • Would you like a peek at the bathroom wall I started painting in June? LOL. :/

Well, company came and went…and the wall still isn’t finished. But, alas, I have a fresh batch of company coming in three weeks- and SURELY that will spur me towards the finish line! LOL.

  • wow. i so loved this post. have fun at the beach!!!

  • Oh Amber you’re great, you crack me up.! I thought maybe you can help me, I’m from 1972 (like your bathroom cabinets) and I have some wrinkles … Maybe some paint …I´m really glad to know that your mom is okay, I wish you lots of encouragement, and that everything goes well

God bless you, and happy break. Enjoy the beach!

    BICOS

  • I found myself muttering.. yep. yep. yep..YEP the whole way through your post! We have company coming in a few weeks and on our stroll up the road this evening  I found very quickly had the whole house re-arranged! Oh to keep it simple!

  • what a bundle of energy you are… you crack me up. right now i think i should have some company coming so my house gets cleaned. grrr. i’m pretty sure i would enjoy hanging out at your house, cleaned or not.

happy beach time to you guys.

  • @WildWomanOfTheWest - i sat here several minutes trying to figure out what “tart cleaning” was, until i realized the s just got bumped over by the i. ;) i was thinking it was a new kind of cleaning i wanted in on. lol. and yes YES!! love when everyone’s gone. the house is clean. and i sit back and bask in it’s {short lived} cleanliness!! :) )

  • @redladybug18 - @TrentTribe - okay, you both mentioned that book.. gonna have to check it out! :)

  • @seekinHISwisdom - yes, the bed was fun to paint. i spray painted it then rolled it to give it a little texture. super easy!! and like the results so much better than what it was before~

and you’re smart for starting now on all your projects for the wedding.. instead of waiting till the day before, like i usually do. :) ) and btw, i miss you!

  • @richlyblest - so true! loved what you shared~

  • @Cluesy - amen on the idea for a comfy clothes blog by kendi! ;)

  • @BettyGermil - you’re such a sweetheart. thanks, betty!

  • @singingrachel - and i would LOVE you hanging out at my house too!! :)

  • @grace_to_be -  have you really never heard of those books? They’re great! Chick-fli-a gives them out with their kids meals sometimes, I think that’s where I first heard of them.

  • Oh how I can relate! LOL! After having my 6th kiddo I was forced to change and relax some, praise God.  Love your pictures!  And with the skirt and shirt…I like it a lot better not tucked in.  It seems to go better to me untucked.  You can pull it off! :) Headed to register my two oldest boys this morning for the middle school here. You sharing about school helped me a lot.  Thanks! It is nice to hear others who go with public school, too.  Blessings to you, friend!! ~Deborah

  • So cool that your family was there!!! And yay for having the bathroom repainted. ;) I like the outfit you put together, especially with the shirt tucked. I like that look, but can’t wear it myself. I think you should start doing a what I wore post at least weekly. :) You always have such a great way of putting together clothing.

  • Oh, and I was curious…did you get another camera? Which one?

  • Yep! Exactly how it works around here too.
We have a Thanksgiving joke here…Jeff is usually finishing up some project while I am finishing in the kitchen and company is walking in! Have a Great time with your family. Enjoy the beach! =)

  • Oh, I am totally that kind of cleaner! Living in an apartment has helped, though. There is less to clean, and painting is not my job. ~~ Not sure I could rock the prints with striped thing. Hmmm… I want to be a cool, hip granny, but I think I better let that style pass me by! LOL! Have you ever read Karen’s Main’s book Open Heart, Open Home? It taught me so much about what true hospitality is. I want people to feel totally welcome and relaxed in my home, and they will never feel that way if I am all fluttery and obsessive. (I can get like that!) I love it that my cell group kids just walk into the kitchen, open the refrigerator and get what they need. They are good kids, and I enjoy them so much. And… now I am rambling!

  • I use to be just like that! back way back in the day. . . not sure when it all changed~ somehow, now I think I’ve fallen to far on the other side! company is coming? I heard myself say not too long ago to one of the kids who was like, “Don’t we need to pick up?” I said, “Let them see us as we are. We’re normal like anyone else. . .” Then I remember thinking, – but oh, balance, my dear. Balance. And so I want that, but not sure I’ve got it yet. . . one day though I hope! :)
    have a great time!

  • Love it:) yes we keep relearning all the time!

  • Oh, this was just great! Because yes, that is SO what happens around here too! “Right, Babe, it’ll just take me a few minutes, okay?” turns into a several day affair! And the not seeing much dirt until company is due to arrive and all of a sudden we go on a cleaning frenzy! And even it it’s “just family” - well, for you and I, “just family” is downright special company, the very special-ist. :)

Happy happy beach weekend to you!!

  • @grace_to_be -  Tart cleaning…makes me think of a prude housekeeper. :D

  • of course the bathroom trim is top priority! because even tho family are the best kind of company to have (because there is so much talk going on that even an electric blue bathroom might go unnoticed) they also bring on a kind of crazy excitement that fires up all those cleaning juices! and in your case, a whole bathroom painting! you are too cute a painter and i love the stripes and floral combo. i can never quite make myself tuck in a shirt…i just think it makes my butt look even bigger and that is one thing that doesn’t need more attention! but they say tucking it in a little bit high-waisted totally adds some length to the leg and i DO need all of that length that i can get…happy days to you and the family.

  • Yes, this instantly reminded of the If You Give… series – we love those books – creative cause n effect :)

How did you have time to paint so much when you only intended to do some cleaning?? So, still we care too much of what others think of us huh? ;) We’re afraid they’ll judge us – why do we have a preconceived idea that our house has to be spotless?? Reminds me of the Mary n Martha example in the Bible – what matters most?

Hope you have a blessed, fun weekend.

  • I thought of the mouse cookie books too. ;) you could write the housewife’s version. You guys are all too cute!

  • I know just what you mean..I am the same. I’m sure we all do things when company’s coming we put off other times. I think thete is balance as home makers. We must be good stewards, but keep people priority. Hope you have had a nice week with your family.

  • this cracked me up. one…because yeah. normal. THAT. The Farmer and i will talk about what’s normal…or not. and then laugh. like WE would know. :D

and two, because i know you and paint. <3 and three, because i had the paint can open just this morning. i’m sitting here with white paint on my hands as i type. haha. and we have overnight guests coming this weekend!!! company and paint are somehow related i just know it. AND i’m also eyeballing the curtain i hung up as in the laundry room months ago. been waiting for inspiration…something to COPY…before i alter it to make it fit. i’m thinking that there’s wall paper that needs to be removed too. ;) not saying i will. but saying yeah. i know normal when i see it. snicker. crazy too.

love, always love, seeing your family.

and… the outfits that you put together too. inspires. could you share some curtain ideas for inspiration as well? ;)

  • I FINALLY FINALLY checked this out because I have been off of xanga for waaaay tooo long… I LOVE the way yu mixed your stripes and florals… LOVE it. You would have fit right in here in Tokyo and not felt weird at all and hopefully you inspired fashionistas everywhere around you. :) ))
