  • {trip to the city}

    2359
i’ll take one in each color please!

as his birthday present to me, shayne took me to the city on saturday for a little shopping and dinner!

i love the city. love everything about it.
    the energy of it.
    the wall to wall people.
    the big buildings.
    the taxi’s.
    the diversity.
    the fashion.
    the trains.
    the food.

so funny how shayne is just the opposite. the only thing about the city he likes is the architecture of the buildings.
the wall to wall people drive him nuts. and a shopping mall instantly makes him tired.
he joked and said he knew now why smart phones were created – for men waiting on their wives shopping.
but he was a sweetheart and so patient.
and i do like him with me to ask his opinion about outfits and laugh over the outrageousness of some of the stuff out there.

here’s some of my favorite places and views from the day.
wish i had gotten more of the two of us, but knew i better not push my luck…
city. shopping. AND pictures might just have pushed him over the edge. ;) )

i really wanted some floral pants. i think they’re so cute..
but just couldn’t bring myself to get them.
i couldn’t get past the thought that maybe they look a little like wallpaper rolls on each leg!

what do you think – are you a fan of the new floral/ crazy print pants or no?

we were a little out of our price range in this store.. shoes for $850? who does that?

you know how there’s some stores where you try to not act shocked by the pricetag?
this wasn’t one of them. we were just full on gawking and pointing.
i don’t think i could have hid my surprise had i tried.

the alarm actually went off when we left and shayne joked that he stole me a shoe.
i kept looking over my shoulder, positive one of those big burly guards they had standing by the doors was coming after us.

we had a clean getaway. ;)

and that was our day in the city.
can tell shayne is a little tired. actually i think it was the flash. or maybe both! ;)

what about you.. are you a city or country kind of person?
i must admit, as much as i love going for visits… my heart is all country!!

    happy tuesday evening my lovelies.
here it’s chili for dinner then on to youth.

  • O i LOOOOVVVVE this Amber! It really makes me wish all the more that Tim n i could get away to a city again! I am def a country girl but i do love a good city for a day or weekend. Your pics are Gorgeous! So glad you two got away like that! And Target!? Yay for you! Im sure Shaynes thrilled too.;)

  • Looks like your trip to the city was a lot of fun! My daughter lives in that very city you visited and I love going for the day, there’s so much to enjoy but I wouldn’t want to live there…mostly it’s the traffic I hate, I find the 401 brutal and rush hour in downtown TO is enough to drive you mad! We live in a subdivision in a rural setting it’s about 25min to a small city that not so many years ago was considered a town. I like my wide open space out here but sometimes I wish I did live in the city because once I get home from work I have no desire to turn around and go back to town because of the drive but I wouldn’t mind just going out for a bit rather than being stuck at home. There’s pros and cons on both sides.

I like the floral pants…on you…on me they’d probably look silly but you have that kind of flair.

We are getting a Target in Lindsay which is not far from us. We are wondering how it is different from Wal-mart?

A happy Tuesday to you, Amber~Dawne

  • I loved your visit to the city. I love to visit cities, but my favorite place to be is in the country.

  • I like to visit cities, but am so glad I don’t live in one. My husband hates cities.

  • Once again…Shayne and Jeff, two peas in a pod. When we were shopping at Water Tower this past Christmas, Jeff sat and played on his phone (with all the other husbands) and said something along the same lines as Shayne. Lol.

I Love, love, love the city..however I can also go country. My family however would never dream of living in the city, so country I am. ;)
I have one of those exact lanterns from Pottery Barn in my room on my dresser…but it’s the giant one.
The floral pants, love them but don’t know if I would wear them. Still deciding, but leaning toward no.
    Your new bracelet…so pretty!
I love the city pictures. The cabs, the lights, the snow.

    Happy Birthday again!!!
    XxOo

  • and You’re getting a Target!!! Yay for you!!! =)

  • Oh, this is just SO FUN!
I’m a city loving girl who lives in small town/country. :)
Such great pictures, and the SNOW! And Anthropologie!! Even before the sign I was excited to see that place! Such dreamy adventurous inspiration!
    Family is waiting, must run…
    xoxo

  • Love to see the tall, unique buildings of a city, but would much rather spend a day in the country – hiking!! Big cities make my mind a jumbled mess,an overload of things to see, take in – too much makes it all a blur. The stores only remind me what I can’t afford, but wish I could :( Too many choices when it comes to shopping, so then I can’t decide on anything. ;) yes, give me the peace, quiet and tranquility of the country any day! But, I’m happy you had a fun, blessed day! Glad you got to enjoy time alone with Shayne.

  • yesyesYES! to EVERYthing you wrote about the city! me-exactly-too!!! love it!
and funny that those are probably the same reasons why i am okay with saying goodbye city and hellooo country till we leave it!

you captured so much awesome with your pics. starting with the shoes. :) a few years ago i went up the cn tower with a nursing baby and 5 other kids. i think it was the cost effective approach at the time to getting the kids up there. way cool. glass floor. scared the tar out of me which i loved.

so i’m hearing you on fearless. :) somehow that connected with me.
if you see me in floral pants… you’ll know that i’m working on that fearless thing. too.
    xo

  • I share your sentiments over the city… glad to visit, but not to live! Good thing for those smart phones huh? : )

  • Happy belated birthday. I really enjoyed your pictures.
I’ve always thought floral print pants are cute, but never actually bought them for me.

  • I like all your pretty pictures of the city. I will have to admit it does seem strange seeing snow in the city but I love it. Actually never been in the city with snow.
I’ve been in those stores with the high price tags unknowingly only to gasp and leave after looking at the first one. I’m sure the clerk is used to it but the sights of people they see everyday looking at the price would probably be funny. lol
I do love the city a day here and there and for special stuff but wouldn’t give up the country where it’s quiet and peaceful and the sky is huge, at the end of the day.
oh and on the flower pants….I can’t say I’m on THAT fashion band wagon yet. Who knows maybe I’ll come around eventually :P
    Chili sounds SO yummy!

  • I always love your beautiful pictures.  You capture so well and I felt myself there.  Not with the two of you, of course.  It wouldn’t do to crash a date.  :)   I think I would enjoy city life, but my family is so, so country that I know it will never happen.   Belated happy birthday, Amber.

  • I do love the city, but I also am happy when it’s time to leave. I would not like to live my life at that pace all the time. Do you think cities have different “flavors?” Maybe I am just weird, but I think they do! I am glad you had a wonderful day of fun with your man in the big city! I do like getting inspired with decorating ideas, but I am not really a fan of most Danish styles. It is too stark and bare for my taste. I am glad there is Pinterest!

  • Floral pants wouldn’t do a thing for me! Maybe I’m too old.

Enjoyed the photos of the buildings. I am very familiar with some of those buildings. I see them from the bus when I go to the City. Just wondering which mall you went to?

Where is the Target going in?

  • First of all, YAY for the Target!!! YAY

Secondly, I’d take one of each of those shoes too. :D

Thirdly, I love both the city and the country. Can’t we have both??!

Fourthly, you’d probably look cute in the floral pants but I would never wear them.

  • I like the country ~ big cities make me paranoid, I’m afraid.  LOVE the shot of the flying birds ~

  • What a wonderful trip!! I hope you had a happy birthday for sure!!!

I really like the lanterns on the bed! So pretty. But my first thought was…..that could be a fire hazard. ;)

  • What a wonderful time away with your husband!!! I LOVE the city. I would live there if I could. :)

  • I really love the bracelet. The cities are fun for a visit but I wouldn’t want to live there. Definitely a country girl as far as that all goes. Great pictures!

  • i still can’t believe that Anthro is IN Toronto and I haven’t been yet. OY. Which mall were you at…Looks like the Eaton Centre at one point. I adore the pottery barn, found it at one of the malls and almost spent all my money in one day. your pictures are beautiful, finds are beautiful and looks like you two had a great time. i really like the one of you twirling on the parking garage roof. Maybe one day we’ll meet up in TO and we can have a shopping trip girls time ;) love you girl.

  • Aw, what a great date! I had to laugh at the “pushing luck with too many pictures” thing. Dan is the SAME WAY! I guess most husbands probably are. haha

  • I always love your pictures. Looks like such a fun trip! I love the city for a night or week, but wouldn’t want to live there. DH loves the food and architecture, then he’s ready to head to the country. :)

  • @DawneElla - yes.. the 401. :( shayne is on it now and just called to say it would still be a few hours. ugh.

i would say the difference between wal mart and target is the atmosphere. most target’s have a starbucks as you walk through the door. and then these fun little dollar bins that have the cutest things. the clothes are great and housewares are kind of a knock off of pottery barn styles. they’re certainly pricier than wal mart so i don’t typically buy groceries or household things there.. but for clothes for the girls especially, or a cute gift for someone.. definitely. :) )

we need to get all the canadian xanga peeps together for a meet up in the city one of these days!!! fun fun..

  • @lifeisadance - inspiration, yes!! i’ve rarely bought anything at anthro but love to walk through just to get ideas! :) ) my sis in law and i dream of being on their design team.. can you imagine!! what a job!!

  • @wj3km - haha. what you described of the city is exactly how i feel when i go in a thrift store!! overwhelmed w/ the racks and racks of things to go through. i love it. but yeah.. it overwhelms me. and i hear ya on being reminded what i can’t afford. i’ve learned to shop the back of stores.. where the clearance racks are! and i was proud of myself that i only spent 30 dollars. i’m saving up my little stash for some real live canadian winter boots!! ;)

  • @quiet_hearts - but if you brought your husband it would be a double date.. we’d love it. :) )

  • @DanishDoll - YES! i do. everything seems bolder. more rich. like the restaurant we ate at.. we thought it was a simple family owned italian place, but couldn’t pronounce half on the menu and when it was all said and done i was like, “take me to mcdonald’s!” ;) ) i prefer simpler things – especially in my food!

  • @LadyoftheManse - we were at yorkdale and eaton. and the target is going in somewhere on the north side of toronto.. kinda close to vaughn mills. i don’t remember the exact exit. we had gotten off to get gas when i saw it. :) )

  • @ajoyfulnusiance - yes. fire hazard OR they would fall on you in your sleep and kill you. ;) that’s the thought that went through my brain… i think i would do smaller ones.

  • @mytoesareblue - yep.. we’ve gotta meet there this summer. and we’ll invite the other canadian xangans too. :) )

  • @grace_to_be -  I don’t remember ever going to Yorkdale, but I’ve been to the Eaton Centre. When I’m in the City, I’m usually east of the Don Valley Pkwy in Scarborough. But I take the bus into downtown, usually, unless the whole family goes down.

  • LOVED everything about this post. I’m in a rush, but I at least wanted to leave a comment! I can never get enough of your photography. Awesome.

  • That is the most beautiful trip to the city I have ever seen.  Thank you for “taking us along”.  ;)

  • I need to add that I just went against all my fears and bought some CRAZY flower print skinnies and I adore them! I’m not sure I should wear them with my big butt, but a pair of butts helps balance it out… Definitely glad I bit the bullet on those! You rock the flowered pants!

  • I love the pictures! What a fun, vibrant city!

  • I say yes to the flowered pants…on you! They looked so cute. I love floral prints, but would have to go to a skirt or dress for myself.
I am definitely a country/town girl to live, but like to have a day or two to visit a city. It was kinda fun winning conf. trips when we used to be in Pampered Chef. I went to San Francisco, Bob went to Chicago, and we both went to Orlando, DC, and New Orleans. That was fun, they paid hotel, and some of the meals and entertainment. The sticker shock of the big city is somethin. Here in Southern California it is all urban sprawl, but still not as intense as big city, and we have the beach and hills.

Dan and Heidi were just remarking on the diff. between Walmart and Target. They said in our area they are similar, though Target has better designed household items and such. But where they live, the Walmart is so heavily used and abused it seems rather getto, so they go to Target.

  • I agree with Jenny about the flowered pants – I LOVE them…on YOU!! I wear skirts, and always wish there were those pretty colors and patterns I see in jeans and capris in a skirt!

I love the city for a visit, but I’m definitely a country gal.  We live near Houston, and I enjoy going in occasionally.

Em and I have “arguments” about Target vs Walmart all the time. I LOVE Walmart, but we live near a resort area, so our closest Walmart is slightly better than many I’ve seen. I really love some things about Target, but every one I’ve every been in (and that’s not that many) has huge gaps in the shelves! When I go to purchase off someone’s registry, you can BET more than half their choices are not available! The tag may very well be there, but the shelves are empty! Really frustrating!

I’m so glad you had a good time on your birthday outing! You and hubby are so cute!!

  • I think the city is so fun for a visit but I cannot take more than a weekend there!!
As for the pants… Well you my dear can pull it off! If I tried .. Two things would happen…. My teens would mock me;) and then my husband would disown me ha ha! He’s very traditional! I straightened my hair the other day and he flipped :) :):)

  • Oooolala! How fun! I love the city for all the reasons you mentioned first. All the people and movement and action feels energizing. But I always wonder if I’d like it if I always lived there. I wish someone would let me try. :) What a great birthday date! And Pottery Barn. Seriously. I just want to live in their store. I know everyone always drools over Anthropologie and I”ll admit, they’ve got some super cool inspiration going on. But when I walk into a Pottery Barn, I feel as though I’ve come home. So AWESOME that you are getting a Target! I just saw a sign in our hinky dink town 40 minutes away that there is a TJ Maxx coming. I was on a high for an hour. :) Hey, when you’ve basically got Dollar General and Kohls …… ;)

  • now that was a true gift of love from your hubby! Him doing something that he knows you enjoy but that he really doesn’t! I loved all of the pictures. My most favorite was the one of you on the rooftop twirling in the snow! *Magical! Happy belated birthday.
