by way of bathroom style
fifth.editionthere’s a fire in the fireplace.
at any time i think those low clouds outside my window are going to break open..
start pouring down the rain.
hence making it a good morning to still be in my pj’s under a comfy blanket on the couch.reese is next to me with a richard scarey lift-the-flap book.
but this isn’t really a post about decorating as much as it is a lesson in contentment for me!
so every other sentence i’m having to stop, and open a flap three or four times..
because of course, to open it only once is just not good enough with a two year old!!
i wanted to share a simple before and after of our bathroom.
which isn’t really that exciting of a makeover.
and i’m not sure if it’s even kosher to post pictures of your toilet on the internet.~
though i do love the whole process of creating beautiful spaces in our home..
i admit i’ve found myself really struggling since moving here.
wanting this place to be nice and look how i envisioned -
yet feeling restrained because we’re only renting, and often not having the extra money to just go buy what i’d like.
i’d say my style has become somewhat shabby chic/ vintage/ garage sale/ side of the road junk no one wants kind of style.
not necessarily because that’s really my style but more because i’ve had to adapt through the years-
learning to work within the limitations i had.and it has been.. i started to write fun, but that’s not really the right word.
because there’s many days i’ve sat in tears at the not so fun-ness of renting.
of working within a budget, or no budget at all.
maybe the better word, instead of fun, would be freeing!
finally realizing that just because i don’t own it. can’t buy it. doesn’t mean i have to live discontent or discouraged.
and that’s not saying i never feel that way… i said LIVE that way! and to me there’s a difference.
it’s one thing if we struggle with feeling discontent. it’s another if we allow ourselves to live in it!“misery is easy. it’s happiness that is hard work!”
for me, it’s coming back over and over again to taking my focus from what i don’t have onto what i do.
from what i can’t buy to looking around at what could work instead..when others come into my home and comment on my creativity
i laugh and assure them it’s merely me being forced to take what i already have and try to see it through new eyes.
to use things in different rooms. in new ways~and so – enter downstairs bathroom.
the one that if you come to my house, will probably be the one you’ll use.
and just so ya know.. it’s around the corner on the right from the front door!like any typical foyer bathroom, it’s small.
here’s what it looked like when we first moved in~
and though i do like teal and peach separately, i’d don’t really care for them together!
{sorry if those were the colors of your wedding}we decided to buy a 20 dollar gallon of paint {the cheapest you can get at home depot} to go over the walls.
problem was. even though the walls looked better it didn’t change the color of that marbled hunter green countertop.the guy that built this house must have gotten a super deal on that particular formica because it’s everywhere in here!
one day while racking my brain on how in the world you could change countertops..
without flat out replacing them, i remembered that i’d heard of a paint specifically designed for painting countertops.
however one googled trip to home depot and i quickly realized that wasn’t in the bathroom budget!but then the idea of painting it wouldn’t leave my brain.
and yes. anyone who knows me even a little will know where this is going.
one afternoon i got out the painters tape and taped everything around it.
and by everything i mean basically the entire bathroom within 20 inches of the sink was covered in painters tape!
i then got my can of spray paint that i picked up at wal-mart. shook it hard. and went to town!
it ended up taking 2 cans by the time it was all said and done.but
the results turned out better than i thought, and best part –
no more marbled green countertops.
when i took the paint off around the edges though it pulled some of the paint from the walls.
i didn’t have any extra paint to go over it. and didn’t want to spend another 20 bucks on a new can.
so. i lived with it awhile. trying to stragically place things on that little ledge to hide the peeled paint.
anyone know what i’m talking about?decorating to try to hide the flaws!
the other day i decided it was time for something more permanent over it.
and that’s when i went on a little shopping trip – around my house!it was ben’s room where i found what i thought i was looking for..
and it seemed fitting to make a it a bit more boyish since i call it his bathroom anyway -
after all, it’s on his list of chores each week to clean!i took an old map from his wall and cut it to fit right along the counter.
securing it with just some cute push pins i found at target.
i burnt the edges for more of an old feel~
and apparently i have a thing for burning the edges of maps!the leftover pieces of map i put above the mirror…
that’s my favorite postcard ever.. it speaks to me of our whole move here!
and just some more of the details and yes, that’s a globe next to the toilet!see. nothing fancy or mind blowing..
but hopefully a small encouragement to not let your limitations stop you from creating spaces that make your home a bit more cozy~“Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.”
by the way – here in canada it’s called the washroom.
curious. what do YOU call it??
restroom. bathroom. washroom. the room where mom goes for a little peace of mind?happy friday y’all.
amber.

I love it Amber. I can So relate to this. I am a renter also, with a very very limited budget that pretty much never stretches to make room for decor. As soon as I get a weekend or a day or two in a row that I can, I’m going to shop the house and do my bathroom too. I LOVE the maps idea.
Incidentally the colors of my wedding were peach, and hunter green. Not teal. But close. I laughed OUT.LOUD when I read that sentence about wedding colors.
Happy Friday to you, Amber!
Let’s make casseroles this weekend!
I love it girl! way to go! I feel for you though having to live with the green marble stuff other places in your house. Who in their right mind picks peach and green TOGETHER for a bathroom? Never would have entered my mind to spray paint the sink…the things renters come up with
As far as names for it: it’s the bathroom around here and out in public it’s the restroom
we jokingly call it the reading room! because without fail…with more than one child… (they must be related! but they didn’t get this from ME. ) when it comes time to doing simple chores, they disappear. uh huh. needing the bathroom. uh huh. with a book. right. sure. i’ve overheard threats from a good mom
to take them to the dr and get things checked out for cryingoutloud if it’s really taking that long for…things to function.
my map loving heart is pounding!!! and i’m laughing about “wedding colors.” no, they weren’t mine…but many of my friends had those back in the day. i just finished taking down 25 year old plus wall paper in our downstairs heh heh “reading room” this week. and i was thinking —oh boy! redoing a room in a rental. and how to keep it cost effective?!!! that’s me too. i just love what you did amber. if you could swing by and help me with mine…that’d be great.
happy friday back!
you did an awesome job!!! i absolutely love it
and yeah…it’s been a little weird getting use to calling it a washroom lol!
@down_onthefarm -
When I see a kid headed in there with a book or an electronic device and they are supposed to be otherwise occupied I make them hand it over. haha
OH and we call it the bathroom.
@aSeriesofFortunateEvents - me too! and yet…it still happens under my nose.
I sold a globe just like that at a garage sale several years ago, because we had no need of it anymore ~ my sister snatched up and sold it for WAY more at her antique booth ~
And right this moment, (well, at least after I get back off of here), I am shopping the house to fill a space on a shelf in the spare room. Most of the time, though, my house just stays the same ~
Looks fabulous! You just astound me with your energy and creativity. I am just trying to find some energy to get things stowed and organized around here! You are an inspiration, again! I just, accidentally, dribbled some hair color on the bathroom splash yesterday…I was trying to decide if painting the whole room was in order. I am thinking to paint some vines instead, and if they don’t work out, THEN I will have to paint the room
it’s a bathroom here. i am not as creative as you, and with a really low budget right now… things just aren’t getting changed up much. i don’t really like my decor, but i don’t care enough to put the time and effort to change much of it. but go you!!
It’s so good to ‘see’ you again! I’ve been gone too long. (just sent you a PM
As for your bathroom (yep, that’s what we call it) I am amazed again at your resourcefulness! You ended up with a lovely room.
I have thought about painting the countertops in my kitchen, because they are an ugly olive green color (and the nasty carpet is blue–go figure!) but dh isn’t very thrilled with the idea, so I guess we’re waiting until we can just replace the cabinets. I will be very interested to hear how it wears! I have a bathroom vanity that is pure white…except for the two little stains from who-knows-what. And I would love to paint it, but had never thought of just doing it myself!
You are a brave lady.
That is so awesome-you are so talented when it comes to interior decorating!
I need to figure something like that out for my own bathroom!
That turned out fantastic!! Doesn’t it make you feel kind of proud of yourself when you make something new from things you already have? I think contentment and resourcefulness go hand in hand
You totally need to submit this to BetterAfer!
Love it…so creative (or whatever you want to call it!) What do we call our bathroom? The Pod–for whatever reason, I don’t know. The name came with my husband when we got married.
Okay, I am quite impressed! I never would have thought to paint over formica like that. And, btw, I love your style. That’s pretty much the way I shop/decorate too. Around the house/DIY/thrift store, this and that
Very creative, well done! I shop the barn and the pastures a lot.
We call it the outhouse.
We have six bathrooms, and I’ve yet to show even one of them. Wait, I think I did show the bunkhouse bathroom. Oh and my master bath. My word, I am such a fibber.
Again Amber, well done!
Cute makeover. Your style reminds me of my sister’s style…somehow she can make something out of nothing and it’s beautiful.
Where we live, the bathroom is called the WC (water closet), toilet, or loo. Between that and calling it the bathroom in the States and the washroom in Canada, sometimes I stutter around to remember which word to use.
Good job! I call it a bathroom. In Africa we called it “da ti ino”. Literally house of urine.
Oh, this is just fabulous! I love the maps! I laughed out loud at the wedding colors, because oh boy, that was just too funny.
And I laughed out loud at the spray painted countertop!! Seriously, you’re so funny!
Me and spray paint are really good friends too, just ask my husband.
What a great makeover to the restroom. Love these ‘shop the house’ editions that you do.
We’re owners now, but rented for quite a while and I KNOW the feeling of not wanting to sink much money into a house because of many reasons.
And also know how it forces someone either to despair or creativity!
You’ve done a fabulous job!!
xoxo
Oh, I have missed you and your inspiring posts. I am so, so curious how the spray paint will hold up on the bathroom vanity! You will let us know, won’t you? You think I could spray paint carpets?
i’m always so inspired by your ‘shop the house’ segments. and, just you in general actually.
cute bathroom makeover. love the maps and globe. pretty smart really cuz, there’s always something to read in the bathroom if you happen to forget to grab a magazine on your way in. ;O)
yes, bathroom here too. although i find myself calling it a restroom often too. not sure what that’s about. i remember the washroom days in Canada. i rather like that. but, if i say that here and now, i just sound like a loon. ha! that’s Canadian too, eh? (i know, i’m on such a roll. i must stop.;))
love you girlfriend!
have a great weekend!
I love it! You have such great taste! I wish I could blink you over here to do a makeover in our apartment! I collect bits and bobs of things at second hand shops and use them to change the institutional look of living in a cheap, concrete block! I use plants and color, frame posters, paint baskets, etc, to try to make things special. I am now a Pinterest girl, and am getting lots of inspiration there. (Although hubby is a bit worried at some of my stunts!) Here in Europe, we just call that room the toilet. (Unless you live in GB or N. Ireland and then it is “the loo!”) Visiting my daughter for the birth of the new grandchild, I had to remember that diapers are “nappies” and the garbage can is “the bin.” So many different names for things! I also kept getting in the wrong door of the car! Not so used to driving on the left side of the road and shifting with your left hand!
i love what you did. Very impressed w/ the spray painted countertop! That was very resourceful. I would have never thot about using spray paint, but i could totally see how it would be okay to use on formica. I like your shop the house segments too, altho my house has nothing that great that is going unused, kwim? I do switch stuff up on occasion, to add a differant look.
I tried to get my internet to work yesterday and simply couldn’t stay connected long enough to say I really like your washroom!! We call it the “head” on a boat :O) I still call it the bathroom!
I, too, love your “Shop the house” segment. You did such a super job, and I love the map/masculine theme. It probably makes it a little easier for Ben to clean, huh?
Clicked from friend’s link on facebook. Very nice! Pinning!
girl, you are gifted. period. and i love when you do these segments. you inspired me once again. and yes, i laughed too @ the peach n green comment. love your humor. happy sunday sweet friend.
It really looks so good! I’m amazed by the creativity in people. I’ve said it before, I am just creative enough to frustrate myself! Even more than your decorating talent, I’m impressed with how resourceful you are….been thinking about that lately…..making sure that I’m not wasteful and that I make the most out of what I have.
Hope your weekend has been good……I’m stopping for the first time in a few days and it feels good!! Busy busy…
Love ya!
spray painted counter tops …. who knew??!! genius : )
@aSeriesofFortunateEvents - well, hunter green and teal are VERY different. you’re excused.
)
@aSeriesofFortunateEvents - p.s. haha.. i DID make a casserole!!
@down_onthefarm - ”reading room.” yep!! that’s where i am now.. reading, of course.
i think you should wallpaper your whole bathroom in maps~ that would be cool!
@homefire - hey lady! so fun seeing you here again~ it was a crazy busy weekend, so i’ll check my messages later tonight. so far the painted countertops have held up great. painted the upstairs bathroom one too back in the summer… kate gets ready in there each morning, so hot straigtening iron, etc. and so far, so good.
)
i will say if you decide to do it, i used the spray paint with a texture in it. don’t know if it matters, but a rougher finish maybe hides a bit more..?
@VirginiaDawn - is betterafter a website? i’ve never heard of it, but sounds like one i’d love!
@mountain girl - @WildWomanOfTheWest - ~ the pod. the outhouse. love it!! so funny. and tamy – SIX bathrooms. oh, my word. and i thought three was alot!!
@Jabber_wock - haha. i totally stutter before i can get it out too. so i usually give up and just say, “i gotta pee!”
)
@smilesbymiles - oh, hello hello hello!!! i’ve missed you girl. spray paint carpets? let me tell you i’ve been tempted.
so far the countertops are holding up great. we did upstairs too. no chips or burn marks or wear. and the one upstairs gets way more use than the little one downstairs.~
@grace_to_be - http://www.betterafter.net The place is genius and poison all at once.
I LOVE your bathroom! (I say bathroon btw…but I have used all three names in the past
Love the maps. I hung one up in my family room last year…and not only do I love the way it looks, but we are all learning our geography.
I read only half this post..I looked at the pictures when you first put it up…your site has been on my screen all morning. I’ll be back a little while later to finish up! Ha!
Wow!I am very impressed.I don’t think of creative things to do, unless I see it somewhere else.
I might need to find some maps somewhere.
I love it! And you are incredibly creative!! We call it the bathroom but my hubby calls it the library when he’s going to be in there for a while.
Job well done guys, quality information.
