  • {photography. word of the year. and what century is it anyway}

    light~ 003

Guess what? I’m writing from Starbucks again!
    I know. right! ;)

And this time, I feel very twenty FIRST century, thank you very much!

apparently, as a commenter pointed out last post-
I had a temporary brain lapse on what century I’m living in~
    saying,  “I feel very 20th century…”

I must have been listening to 80′s music beforehand.
cause that’ll do that time warp thing to your head every time! ;)

I’m waiting on Emma at dance class around the corner.
I usually stay to watch her, but lately, the parents waiting room has been freezing!!
And I’m sick, which makes me even more cold!
And it’s studio policy for everyone to remove their shoes when they enter –
    making it even more cold!!
especially if you happen to get a wet sock! bleh. hate that.

it’s a bit of a dance show in itself watching people leap. jump. sashay their way through the little puddles…
trying to avoid that dreaded wet sock.

I think I’m going to just become a true Canadian and take slippers with me everywhere! :)

It really is more of a Canadian custom, than in the states, for people to remove their shoes.
Even when people just stop in for a minute and I’m, “don’t worry w/ taking your shoes off…”
They still do. I think it’s really perceived as rude here not to.

So.. if you ever visit anyone in this country~
bring along some cozy slippers, or make sure your socks don’t have holes in them! ;)

It’s really been a mild winter so far. Not much snow..
though today has been trying to make up for it. with a steady dusting all day.

It’s like a giant snow globe outside… small, lacy flakes falling perfectly from the sky.
Every now and then when the wind picks up,  it’s like someone turned the globe upside down and everything goes a soft misty white.

    magical.

There’s something I really love about snow. if only it weren’t so C.O.L.D! :)

One thing I’d like to try to do this year is to learn more about photography~
to let this be the year I figure out what all this f-stop/ shutter speed stuff is about! ;)

Shayne keeps suggesting me starting a business.
which makes me react on two levels -
one. it seems every stay at home mom in north america starts a photography business.
    {just because I own a fancy camera doesn’t mean I know what I’m doing!} ;)
and. I’m not really confident to CHARGE people for my work.

for now. I might just make up a little flyer and pass out to our neighborhood here.
    see what comes of it….

At the end of the day taking pictures will always be more for me than anyone else~
just capturing the memories floating round my own little home here.
I guess if I could do that for others, cool.
and get a bit of money for doing it, even cooler. ;)
So, we’ll see where this journey leads.

First things first though – I need a camera that WORKS!
Something has been not right with mine for months now.
It’s like it doesn’t want to focus..
shifting in and out before finally focusing, then, having to press the shutter down hard to get it to take!

    blue eyes

Someone told me that was a “fault” of Canon 40D’s – the auto focus goes.
Someone else told me it was the lens – 50m. 1.4 they had one do the same.

??not sure which or what. I hate to send it away to Canon..
    last time I did it was gone nearly 2 months! {long story. but short version -  they lost it!}

What about those of you out there who know camera’s better than me..
    {don’t be bashful.. you know who you are!}
Any suggestions or ideas?? Anyone had this happen to them??

    light~ 028

Now. several of you asked last post what I used to put up those book pages?
um. I hate to even admit it, but… SCOTCH TAPE! ;)

and not the cheap, it get’s twisted before you can even tear it off kind from the dollar store -
no. the nice extra wide kind with purple plaid that they say is “designed specially for wrapping!” :)

I tried that yellow tacky stuff teachers use to hang things in the classroom..
but it just bulged out and was totally visible through the thin paper.
and since I wasn’t sure if I was going to like it/ keep it up,
I didn’t want to use any kind of glue or something more permanent …

so. for now it’s held up by plain old tape!

I wonder if I were to decide to keep it up more permanently what it would be like to use a modge podge over it all??
Though I guess that would give it a more stiff look~
and I kinda like the more natural look of the looser pages.

Any ides of what else to use to hold it up??

{I guess I could have titled this post, “Where I ask for your opinion alot…} :)

Speaking of modge podge here’s a fun idea I’m going to give a try~
    isn’t that great!!

For the past several years I’ve chosen a “word of the year…”
Last year my word was HOPE~having no clue when I chose it how I would have to cling to it.
more importantly, cling to The Source where my hope is found!

This year, the word I’ve chosen is, NOW.

you probably thought it was going to be laugh.. ;)
no. that was a just a cool sunset the other night I was trying to catch through that word in the window!
though laughing more, in any year, is always a good idea!! :)

But now was the first word that came to mind when I thought of this next year..
which to me breaks down to mean not living wasting time looking back with regrets, or ahead with worry.
just focusing on what He wants for me right now. in this moment.
and simply coming to a deeper belief that everything that happens is from His hand. what He’s chosen. allowed.
and because of that, being okay {yes, even thankful?} with whatever the now’s might be!

Do you have a word or theme of sorts for this new year? If so. I’d really love to hear.
I find it fascinating how much one word can say for where we are in life, eh.

Welp. hope you all have a terrific weekend.
they say Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year..
    but I really think that title belongs to weekends!!! :)   {do i hear an amen?}

  • I like that you are choosing a word for a year. I have been doing that for many years. This year mine is three words: God Will Provide.

  • word for the year…hmm…been trying to figure out if i have one of those this year. for me, it sort of turns into a theme-ish kind of thing.
does your camera do the not focus thing with other lenses? mine sort of acts that way with my 50mm….depends on how close to the subject i am/the lighting/settings…i’d be so leary of sending my camera anywhere!! hope you get somewhere with those issues tho, cuz that’s annoying!!
and, the removing shoes thing. o i remember how it took me a bit to get used to that when i lived in Ontario! we don’t do that so much either, but i often wonder why not…it really would cut down on dirt. made me laugh, this piece did. =)
happy weekending friend and i hope you are soon BETTER!!!
    take care!

  • I don’t use Canon friend. :0 But aside from that – I had trouble with my Nikon over Christmas not wanting to focus and I cleaned the rim of the lenses where it attaches to the camera and also on the body itself. Got quite a bit of dirt off. ahem. I may have never done that before. Oops. It was Erics idea. Anyway, for what it’s worth – it seemed to respond a bit better after that. something about the sensors not attaching properly. Hope that helps. I think your pics are beautiful. A girl I know here – started taking pictures for her friends and then friends of friends. She started out at 100$ per CD of about 20 pictures. Now she gets over 700$ per CD. WOWZER.
I sure love it. But I don’t have the time to really work it. Stay warm girl. Not envying you there. I’m a cold sissy.
    Love ya.

  • you are TOO funny…your paper project made me smile!  about the canon problem…I had a canon rebel xt….loved that thing and used it CONSTANTLY!!! it started doing what you are describing…kept getting worse, over probably a year’s time…finally just quit…pretty sure it was the shutter button…I guess I totally wore the thing out!…for quite a while I could use my remote and it would take pics…totally anoying, but it worked…well sorta….and then that finally died too…canon has a loyalty program…trade in your old  broken camera and they take $ off a refurbished one…I traded mine in and got the rebel T1i…I’ve had it for a couple weeks, but haven’t really had time to do more then point and shoot…so far I’M IN LOVE!!!!  can’t wait until I have time to try to figure out how to really use it! = ) you have a great eye for pics…I really don’t know too much about the techy side of photography…just enough to be dangerous!  I would LOVE to figure out a way to turn pics into $…and love to learn more about what I’m doing…I’m sure you will have lots of people wanting your services!! happy snapping!!!!

  • I’ve never thought about a specific word for the new year, but I always seem to have a theme.  This year, my siblings and I have a theme together – we are letting life go on!  Not that we’re never going to grieve anymore, but we are moving forward.

Your photos are great, and I definitely think you will do great “going public”.  There are so many ways to learn the craft, and I know you’ll do great!  One idea, while you’re gathering your clientelle – you should offer your many beautiful landscapes and other art photos.  For example, the “LAUGH” sunset would be AMAZING to sell at art shows, etc. Lots of info on that vein of photography, too!

I’m excited for you.  Please keep us updated on how God moves in this area of your life!

  • I think you need to listen to your husband about starting that business! Yes, yes, yes!
You are a Fantastic photographer Amber, put that talent to good use! =)
You can sell raffle tickets….enter for your chance to win a free photo session with Hutch Photography. Sell enough and you can buy a new camera for the session!
There you go…camera problem solved. ;)

Love your word. I’ve never picked a word…maybe I’ll do that this year.
As for your 20th century goof….I almost commented on it, but then I thought maybe you meant to say it that way. Haha!

I agree..weekends are the best times.
Hope yours is a Great one! =)

  • I think you would be great at photography! :) Pray about it.. go where God leads. :)

  • I newver thought of a word for the year before. I think I will pick Thanks. I know next to nothing about cameras, so no advice from me. Do you think we’ll have warm snow in Heaven? Or maybe we just won’t feel the coldness?

  • I too thought maybe you meant to type 20th century ;)
I know you would be a fantastic photographer!!! Dare to allow God to use the talents he gave you – he can do above and beyond all that you can think or even imagine :) Don’t listen to the voice of reason and fear! I’ve been praying fervently for God to help me see what He has gifted me with and how He wants to use me, how I could bring in a bit of income – dont have any ideas yet, but hoping this year….

First decent snow of the winter came yesterday which turned into the first snow day for school – very, very windy which made it bitterly cold :( Many say winter is no fun without snow, but winter is no fun either when it’s too windy n cold to play outside – nice to have coffee shops to warm us up in :)

happy weekend to you and your family

  • I think you will have a great year with that word encouraging you to react with laughter…reminds me of the Biblical story of Sarah and baby Isaac.  :)

I had a word last year and just picked one for this year but I’ll be sharing them (hopefully) on my site soon.

    Happy Saturday!

  • I have no idea about your camera. Do you have other lenses you could switch to so you could see if it just happens with the 50? I have the 50mm 1.4 and lately I’ve been having a lot of trouble with it focusing. I haven’t tried out other lenses to check and see if that forsure the problem. As for sending in your camera I’ve sent mine in several times and I usually get it back in 2 weeks or so. Hope you’re able to figure out what’s the deal with it. Camera’s are great but only if they work :)
I never realized they took off their shoes inside in Canada-that’s got to be cold! My feet are always cold and I live in Texas :) I know in the Asian part of the world that’s normal. Supposedly I’ve heard they do it to keep their floors clean? I have a piano student who is Chinese and when he comes with his grandparents they all take their shoes off at the door.
    Blessings on your weekend!

  • I think Shayne’s on to something. It would be a great creative outlet for your talent. The flyer around the neighborhood sounds like a nice way to start.

I think my word will be “TRUST”.

    Amen to weekends!

  • I think NOW is an excellent word for this year! Time to enjoy this time, and do things now while we are still here and still have the chances to do them.

I have zero camera advice. My NikonCoolpix broke and I use my iphone. ugh.

We take our shoes off at our house, almost immediately upon entering. So much that my kids take their shoes off at other people’s houses too and we have to track them down before we leave! ha.

  • My word for 2012 is “MORE”.  I just blogged about the very thing, actually.  2011 was a monumental year for us- moving to a new state, a new job, a new life in many ways, and a great deal of new work and rearranging being done in my heart.  I chose MORE for 2012 b/c I think God wants me to live out what He started in me last year, to put it into practice, and to continue to keep it up!  Keep on finding my spot in a new community, church, and in Him.

  • just think, how fun would it be to do some photography on the side! it wouldn’t even feel like a job, it’d be so fun, and plus bring you a little cash to buy those uggs. :) and you could always choose your schedule. :) hope you can figure out your camera troubles though. i’m a huge canon fan, even though i just have a rebel. i’ll never go to any other brand.

and a word of the year… sometimes i do that, and sometimes it seems to come to me at the *end* of the year. :) this year, however, it’s abide.  for the parenting challenges, to know how to be a wife,  a friend, a neighbor, and just how to live. abide.

oh, and i really love the first picture – the ‘laugh’ with the sun coming through. really great artistry there!

    happy weekend to you! ♥

  • Oh me.  Never thought of doing a word for the year, but it’s a lovely idea.  I will think about it.

I love your photography and would be so happy if you’d do our family photos sometime.  It’s too bad that Ontario and Alberta are so many thousands of miles apart.  I think you should listen to your husband.  You’d be great.  And yes.  Canadians and their shoes.  Aren’t we polite?? :)

A wonderful year of Now and Laughter to you.

  • You have such a great eye for catching amazing angles, creative shots, perfect lighting. You should do it! I’m totally the same way with photos…it will always mostly just be for us, for our family’s memories. I hope your Canon problem can be solved soon! I am having some troubles (different ones) with mine, so I called Canon to see around how much $ they thought it would be to fix. Their “minimum charge” is crazy!!!!! Hopefully you can figure it out without having to send it to them for a long time and without having them charge so much. : )

  • I would like to hear if there are answers for your camera troubles, it sounds similar to what mine also does.

I had never chosen a word of the year, but upon thinking on it I would have to say, Contentment!

  • I think you SHOULD start your own business. If you were in my neighborhood (or in the same country for that matter LOL) I would be calling you! I love the like to the Psalm. Thanks for the reminder. So many times He has been my only hope…

  • You could’ve fooled me…….. Your photography is amazing!!! Definitely pursue some clientele!

  • you heard an amen from me in my corner {about weekends. and other stuff too actually. great post. and dang. snow IS cold :) }

i started reading this the other day/night :)  not sure when it was now, but didn’t get to really finish and comment. but i had that word thing in my brain. how much i like that idea…and how often i’ve been given words for different seasons in my life…and wondering what my word would be if i picked one for the year, 2012.
it was sunday, sitting in church that he gave me mine. transcend. 1 to go beyond the limits of, overstep, exceed… that’s it. i’m looking forward to what that’s gonna mean…

you go girl with those neighborhood flyers and up and coming business! do it in the now. :) you are so talented and have such a clever creative eye. it cracks me up that you say you don’t know how to run a camera…for not knowing, you do an awesome job. i always love your ideas and beautiful shots.

hope that you all are feeling better by now…take care! <3 <3 <3
