{book page wallpaper}
In my opinion, wallpaper is like cutting my bangs…
it’s just never a good idea, in any era, no matter how cute it might look in a magazine.
Several of the rooms in this house had some type of wallpaper, or border.
and for the most part I was able to just rip it off, and it looks it was never there. {kinda.. in the right lighting}
But in the entryway, on the wall going up the staircase, the border was separated by a two tone wall,
making it impossible to simply take off without redoing the entire area.
And since we’re only renting, we don’t want to pour any more money into this place than we have to..
But. the border bugged me.
{and the hole in the wall}
and so I began to try to think of how to cover it up without spending alot of money~
Months back I was working on hanging book pages on one of the walls in Kate’s room.
one afternoon while sitting in the area at the top of the steps outside her room,
tearing apart a book, with the little girls playing around me..
I started looking at that wall down the staircase, wondering if the book pages might work better there –
to cover that unwanted border?I was going to make a border of sorts from the pages, just wide enough to cover the other..
but as I began working on it, it went a bit further than that.

I finally finished it up right before the holidays~
not sure if I’m thrilled with the results..
I think it would be more suited to a library/office space with dark wood and overstuffed leather.
{maybe my next house}
But. for now it fixed the problem of the annoying border, and alteast it’s more unique. more me.
AND. I only spent $3.75 vs. 50 or 60 on cans of paint!
It’s actually become quite the conversation piece when people come in.
And it strikes me kinda funny that usually the very first questioned asked is,“What book is that?”
As if I read this really great book, then decided to enshrine it on my walls!
I honestly didn’t know what the title was! it was just something I picked up at the thrift store for that purpose ~
but after being asked often enough I dug the discarded cover from the garbage –
so. for the record, it’s “The’ King’s Cavalier.”
and from the parts I’ve read as I hung it.. it seems fairly interesting. If you’d like to read it you’re welcome to come sit on my steps.
I’ll even provide you with a glass of iced tea!!
There was some language throughout.. but I tried to hang those pages high!
Didn’t want the kiddos blurting out colorful choice words as they wandered up the steps,
randomly reading aloud – as they now do that the staircase is plastered with a book!

I added some branches to try to make the distinction that this was where the pages were supposed to stop -
and not some unfinished project. which is what it looked like to me before.Again, not sure if I’m really sold on them –
I’m starting to feel there’s maybe tree overkill in my house…
like it wouldn’t surprise me to see a bird flying round in here before too long, from a nest it’s made in one of the branches!
I have some other thoughts for a “border” across the top, but for now. this is it.

book page frame and sticks on entry table to just tie in w/ wall~
It’s challenging.. and not necessarily a challenge I like, of trying to work with someone else’s style’s and choices -
sometimes I dream of walking through Home Depot and saying,“I’ll take that sink. and that light fixture. and one of THOSE dishwashers!!”
but I’m reminded nearly every day as I look around at tree branches and ripped books hiding unwanted wallpaper and ugly countertops, that if I’m not content with what I already have I’ll never be content with what I think I want. because contentment isn’t really about my circumstances as much as where I choose to focus in those circumstances~
before.

after.

I’ve been writing this post from the Starbucks in Chapters while waiting on the kids at youth group/ awana.
I’ve never actually done this before.. taken my computer into a Starbucks!
I feel so 20th century.
but now that my chai tea latte is gone though, I think I’ll go check out the books!
ARe you reading any good ones right now..
any you’d rather be using as wallpaper. ha!!I just started Hunger Games and I’m hooked!

you are so amazing! it looks awesome Amber!!!
Fun! I’ve been itching to paint – so maybe Anna’s room over Spring Break in March. I loved the Hunger Games. It was like nothing I had ever read before – but a couple chapters into it – and I was hooked!
Grace you are so UNIQUE!!!! I love it!!!!!!!
I really like it Amber. I’ve been adding a bit of whimsy to my wild west, so enjoying the process. I’ve been itching to do a book pages project, but have yet found it. Thanks for more inspiration!
so creative and I love it! the sticks are so pottery barn, very cool!
How fun to sit in starbucks and feel so 20th century
love your posts and you are such a blessing in everything you share!
Emma in that last picture looks like she is getting so tall
Have a wonderful rest or your week and thanks for sharing your projects, so fun to see!
love it. there is something about old pages and words that just gives me weird feelings. like, a sacred haunting feeling. whatever! i love the effects of it all. and love the twigs. you can do no wrong, Amber!!
I think the book pages look great! We are reading White Fang with our children. The boys love it.
it looks awesome! i love it!
Wow! It’s gorgeous!!! And I really like the branches.
How did you apply the pages to the wall? I might steal this idea someday when I have my own house….
What will you think of next?
Be glad I live all the way down here… and I’m not at your house in an ornery mood… with a pencil in my hand.
Miss you!
WOW! That’s so fantastic! How in the world do you think like you do? So inspiring! Somebody give this girl a show on HGTV!!!
turned out amazing!
What a FUN idea!!!
You did a great job…much more creative that plain old paint. =)
That’s pretty cool. I’d have to sit and debate with myself about which book to use . . . LOL
Love it, Amber!! I got a kick out of the 20th century girl you’re becoming.
That sounds very relaxing though. Maybe I should try it!
Gonna pin it! Yep.
Me, too! Me, too! You have done well; not only completing a beautifully clever project but embracing what you do not have. I had to wait ’til I was married 30 years before I could go to Home Depot and pick out a dishwasher, fridge, stove, etc. for a new kitchen. Not a new house….noooo, noooo, that is for the truly lucky people. But just getting a new kitchen was leaving me ecstatic. I feel for you! I have a BUNCH of old books that I’m dying to rip the pages out of, but don’t know quite where to put them, though I do have a nice empty frame. You do have good ideas! Oh I love the twiggy border, too. I wish I could just come over and visit one afternoon.
p.s. …. the blog header is great! I am way behind with knowing how to do that! One of these days, though. one of these days~~~~~~~~~~
It’s amazing how different the area looks – such a neat idea! I like the addition of the sticks for definition, and how you added the book pages and twigs to the table to tie it together. You are really great at this!
I have really wanted to find more reading time, but still working on that one!
Just so you know I am a reader and appreciate all of your artsy skills, I also read the page in your Christmas card and meant to write sooner to see if you still had the book around that you used in the card. I became hooked on my one page of the story you used in my card. My card’s page is about children: Larry, Clyde, and Lucy. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if it turned out to be the same book you used in your stairway, “The King’s Cavalier,” and I could actually find a copy on Amazon.com and read the WHOLE story? Why do I let myself be consumed by such silliness??????
@cherylyn_p - no. i think it was a different book.. i still have somewhere around here. i’ll look and let you know the name if i find it!
too funny you actually READ it! when my brothers were here they were sitting w/ me one night while i was putting some together and started teasing me by reading some of the pages out loud on the cards.. a couple of the things they read made me cringe and i hoped i hadn’t picked some weird/ psycho book or something. i never thought about checking the subject.. i was just after the effect of a book page. haha. glad you found it interesting and i’ll try to find it so you can read the rest!!
Such creativity! You used what you had and I like it!
I love how pretty much anything is a go for decor in this century
what holds the pages together on the wall?? without tearing the wallpaper and paint once you remove them? Isn’t little Reese tempted to hve fun ripping at the pages? hehe, I would be
What an improvement, very creative! Love the look with the branches. My daughter once cover a paneled wall with pieces of crumpled brown paper, when she told me on the phone what she was doing I thought “ugh”. But actually seeing it it looked almost like leather, very nice and covered the 1970′s dark wood paneling so well. She used random sized pieces of the brown paper and it looked very nice. I love that shot of Emma coming down the stairs. I am also curious as to what you used to stick the pages to your wall? I think my daughter used a water soluble glue so she could remove it easily if she didn’t like the look.
that’s awesome! you make me smile
I do like the ‘after’ better then the ‘before’. and i too wonder how you got the pages to stick?? we’ve dealt w/ our (small) share of rentals, and prly spent more money then we should have to make them ours, cuz I was not so crafty as you
How clever you are! I think it looks spectacular! Would never have had the courage to do that….and I love the sticks, too.
love the look, amber. simple and warm. hugs to you! thanks for sharing <3
I’ve been reading “Don’t Waste Your Life” by John Piper…convicting…but it sets that determination in your heart to make this life count.
I love the wallpages, it is “you” and a clever (and frugal) way to update in a non-permanent way. How did you afix the pages?
I like the book pages. It was a creative fix. I hope that someday you will have a house of your own that you can decorate the way you want and that you can go to Home Depot and pick out your own things. There are days I wish Mike and I could afford to either build our own house or totally gut an old one and put in the things we like. That doesn’t seem likely. God knows what is best for us, right?
I love white wonen, go blondie go! Amber will be quiet the cat
i love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
how did you keep the pages on there though
Book paper! How cute Amber!
I’ve been eying some map ideas I’ve seen in the pottery barn catalog.
you’re so talented!
Love this Amber!! So cool!
I really like the way that looks. A definate improvement in the stairway at such a great price…LOL.
My reading has been confined once again to textbooks…uh…trying to hand out until the end of the semester. Sometimes a girl just needs an easy read.
I’d LOVE to sit on your steps and sip tea! (might be a longer trip than I can afford right now though
Very creative!! I definitely like the after a lot better. If I end up in a hideous rental house can I send you pictures of it so you can give me inexpensive ideas to mask it?
David insists I need to stop thinking we’re going to move into something horrible, but I keep telling him I’ve been there and nothing is looking significantly good from street level.
I’m also curious how you know how much you can do in a rental?? Is it different w/ different owners? I hope you will get to own someday! It really is SO much fun and so liberating to be able to decide what you want. You still don’t get to walk the aisles and just say I want that b/c money is still an issue, but at least you can say I want that one of the categories you can afford. Now you made me want a chai tea latte! Happy Thursday!
I love it!
You mean 21st century
This was a great alternative to a more permanent fix. I do like some of the new wallpapers they now have available, but scraping off what you have not chosen is never a fun way to spend your time! I think this turned out very cute.
I love it, Amber! That tops any kind of wallpaper, any day! It looks so “anthro” or something. Who knows, you may have them knocking your door down, trying to get your to sign your ideas away.
My sister did something similar a while back with various sizes of book pages on one wall, and various sizes of maps on another. I fell in love with it then, and now I am all over again! Now if I’d just have an empty wall in MY house…
And you make me smile with your “20th Century” line, because that was me in Colorado! I felt like some cool college kid, but in reality I was this awkward-stage pregnant woman.
Sure was fun though, and wow, not even any interruptions!!
I read the post last night on the phone and couldn’t see the pics. Wasn’t sure if I liked the idea, but looking at it now, I think it works. As to reading, I’ve set down two Michener books half read, because when I read I check out of the world and I can’t afford to check out for the time it takes to read his stuff. I’m working on “The Source” and “The Covenant”. Meanwhile, my wife introduced me to the “Hunger Games” series (she has all three on her Kindle) and she didn’t get her Kindle back for a day and a half ’til I’d finished all three. I really enjoyed them, did you ever read the “Ender’s Game” series by Orson Scott Card? It’s another scifi in a different setting, but equally (in my opinion) enjoyable.
What a creative idea! I like it! And definately much better than the before border.
Been wanting to come over here for a while and get caught up! I love your book wall paper. You are so right on about being contempt. I have to keep learning that lesson over and over.
As for a good book…I think you might have read this one, I vaguely remember you giving it away on your blog…1000 Gifts, by Ann Voscamp. A.M.A.Z.I.N.G.!!! And I also wanted to say thanks for your BEAUTIFUL christmas picture! I so loved your creative little touches. It was by far my favorite pic this year! Do you take those pictures yourself..if you do, I am VERY impressed! You have a beautiful family! Thanks for letting me be a small part of it!
@mrsbiddlebugs - if xanga had like buttons, i’d like this!
miss you too. AND your ornery ways!!
@wj3km - oh, yes! it took a couple of times before she learned ripping the pages from the wall was NOT a new game!!
@Lucy_or_Ethel - i had a friend who did that w/ brown paper~ very cool effect!
@betheelou - maps are a great wall cover too~ that’s Ben’s room!!
and btw. i didn’t pack my lovely little basket away w/ the christmas decor. loved it and the smell too much.. so it’s still out!!
@XXVl - haha! whoops. you’re right!
@lightnindan - i’ve never heard of that one, but when i finish this series i’ll have to check it out.
@mysweetpeas - yes! i love ann’s book. one of my fav reads EVER. and thank YOU too for your card – your beautiful family now smiles out at me every day from the side of my fridge.
as far as the pics. the ones in the woods i took myself. the black and whites were by a friend~ i definitely prefer someone else doing them to me! :/ i think i end up looking out of breath in every shot.. as i’ve just booked it back from the camera to get in the right spot!! haha.
thats just genius. you are the most artistic girl i know. your cards were amazing too. just love seeing what you come up with…. happy friday, miss talented one. ♥
Just gave you Pinterest props on my “Frugal Creativity” board. GREAT idea Amber and VERY resourceful. I give you props too when I share with friends about your “Shop the House” perspective. VERY inspirational. Thanks for sharing. =)
i love that wallpaper idea. there is nothing more soothing, refreshing, exciting than walking into a woman’s home and seeing right away you will get to see another “piece” of her in her creativity! i`d love to see your home in “real”.
this is gorgeous! and YAY for the hunger games!
~*
I think that book project turned out so great, but then I pretty much love anything related to books! Also, my one friend keeps telling me about the hunger game books and I just can’t seem to get past the premise of the story! Maybe soon I will read them!
